MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641108538 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on September 10, 2026, for System And Method For Measuring Absolute Mechanical Stress Of A Post-Tensioned Tendon Using Magnetostrictive Optical Sensing.

Inventors include I. S. Rajay Vedaraj; and P N Bhargav Teja.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: Embodiments herein provide a structural sensing apparatus (100) for measuring absolute mechanical stress along a ferromagnetic post-tensioned tendon (104). The apparatus (100) includes a magnetostrictive-clad optical fibre (106), a magnetic bias source (110), a distributed optical interrogator (112), and a processor (114). The processor (114) synchronously demodulates an optical strain record at an even harmonic of a fundamental frequency of commanded magnetic excitation, forms a ratio between a strain-tone amplitude and an instantaneous magnetic-field amplitude, and determines magnetic permeability and absolute mechanical stress using a calibrated inverse magnetoelastic relationship. The processor (114) further combines a distributed static strain trace with the absolute mechanical stress to distinguish mechanical, thermal, and creep or relaxation strain, determines uncertainty, and generates an updated excitation command comprising a drive current and dwell time for subsequent excitation.
