Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method for fractional diffusion-based multi-modal medical image fusion. The system receives at least two registered medical images, such as CT and MRI images, normalises the images to a common intensity range, and initializes an evolving fused image. A fractional diffusion processing unit evolves the fused image using a fractional partial differential equation comprising a Caputo time-fractional derivative, a fractional Laplacian spatial diffusion operator, and a coupling term based on the input images. The fractional Laplacian is preferably computed in a Fourier domain, while the time-fractional derivative is approximated using Grünwald-Letnikov discretisation. A Crank-Nicolson numerical evolution unit iteratively updates the fused image until convergence. The resulting fused image preserves anatomical edges and fine structures while suppressing noise and retaining complementary information from each modality. The invention is useful in medical diagnosis, tumour visualization, vascular assessment, radiology workstations, and clinical image analysis. (Accompanied Figure No. 1-4)
