Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and system (412) for establishing a Proxy Mobile Internet Protocol (PMIP) tunnel or Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) Point-to-point (PtP) tunnel. The method includes establishing, by a Session Management Function (SMF) (508), a connection with a Data Network-Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (DN-AAA) server (514). Further, the method includes transmitting, by the SMF, one of an authentication request message and an authorization request message to the DN-AAA server over the established connection with the DN-AAA server. Furthermore, the method includes receiving, at the SMF, a Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) information associated with the LMA (416) from the DN-AAA server in response to one of the authentication request message and the authorization request message. In addition, the method includes transmitting, by the SMF, the LMA information to a User Plane Function (UPF) (510) using an interface for establishing the tunnel with the LMA in the wireless communication network.
