Abstract: A satellite communication system (100) for downlink channel quality analysis comprises a satellite (102) communicatively coupled to a ground station (104). The satellite (102) comprises a channel quality control engine (106) configured to dynamically adapt a sequence property, the sequence property being a length and a periodicity of a channel quality reference sequence (CQRS). A channel quality reference sequence generator (108) generates the CQRS from an entity identifier (118) associated with the satellite (102). A telemetry generator (110) inserts the CQRS into downlink frames for transmission to the ground station (104). The ground station (104) includes a channel quality measurement module (114) configured to generate a local replica of the CQRS derived from the entity identifier (118), correlate the local replica with a received signal, and measure channel quality metrics including channel quality received power (CQRP), channel quality interference ratio (CQIR), and atmospheric impacts.
