Abstract: [080] The present invention relates to a system and method for distributed underground mine safety monitoring and emergency communication. The system comprises distributed environmental monitoring nodes, one or more relay nodes, worker-associated wearable safety units, and a central monitoring and control unit interconnected through a long-range low-power wireless communication network. The monitoring nodes sense hazardous gases, temperature and humidity, locally classify environmental conditions, and generate local and wireless emergency alerts. Wearable head and torso units provide worker-proximate environmental and/or inertial monitoring for detection of hazardous conditions and potential falls, while separate wearable emergency switches enable manual distress signalling. Wireless packets carrying environmental, worker, device and emergency information are transmitted directly or through relay nodes to the central unit. The central unit identifies affected nodes or workers, displays and logs received information, and generates centralized audible and visual alerts, thereby providing coordinated environmental surveillance, worker monitoring, emergency reporting and supervisory response in underground environments.
