Abstract: Disclose herein is a system (100) and a method (400) for determining frequency of an input Radio Frequency (RF) signal using a recirculating optical loop. The system includes a light source that generates an optical carrier, which is split into two paths by an optical splitting unit. In the first path, a reference signal generation unit produces multiple optical reference signals with distinct frequencies at corresponding time instances. In the second path, an optical modulation unit modulates the input RF signal onto the optical carrier to form a modulated optical signal. An optical combining unit then combines at least one of the reference signals with the modulated signal to produce an optical beat signal within a detection bandwidth. This signal is detected by a detection unit and converted into an electrical signal. Finally, a processing unit analyzes the electrical signal to accurately determine the frequency of the input RF signal. FIG. 1
