MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641125686 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on October 21, 2026, for System And Method For Detection Of Persistent Consumption-Drift Electricity Theft Using Adaptive Multi-Sensor Baseline Control.

Inventors include Siva Rama Krishnan; Arnav Sharma; and Ananya Dubey.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure proposes a system (100) configured to detect persistent electricity-theft behaviour using adaptive multi-sensor baseline control and long-term consumption-drift analysis, thereby preserving a trusted consumption baseline and distinguishing suspicious consumption behaviour from legitimate operating variations, supply interruptions, and sensor abnormalities. The system (100) comprises a sensing unit (102), a controlling unit (104), and a remote monitoring unit (132). The system (100) validates sensor measurements, establishes the trusted consumption baseline from historical electricity-consumption measurements, and determines baseline deviation, persistence, direction of consumption change, and cumulative consumption drift. The system (100) controls adaptation of the trusted consumption baseline through UPDATE, HOLD, and FREEZE states, preserves a last trusted consumption baseline during the FREEZE state, and generates an electricity-theft-related event based on an operating condition determined relative to the preserved baseline.
