MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202644018130 A) filed by Cummins Inc. on February 18, 2026, for System And Method For Detecting Pre-Ignition In Hydrogen Combustion Engines.
Inventors include Lei Liu; Guotao Suo; Scott R. Baize; and Andrew W. Osburn.
The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.
Abstract: Pre-ignition detection is disclosed for spark-ignited combustion engines that combust hydrogen fuel. Pressure measurements associated with combustion in the cylinders of the engine are taken in the crank angle domain of the engine with a high data rate sensor. A pre-ignition condition is detected in response to a crank angle based pressure condition that exceeds a threshold pressure during a combustion cycle. Knock detection is also disclosed which occurs independently of pre-ignition detection so that pre-ignition conditions only, knock conditions only, or combined pre-ignition and knock conditions can be detected.
