Abstract: ABSTRACT SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CONFIDENCE-GATED ADAPTIVE CLUSTER-HEAD CONTROL IN WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS The present invention provides a technique and an architecture for adaptive control of the cluster heads of a wireless sensor network based on confidence gating. The sensor nodes obtain their states in terms of vectors, compress them, derive their state-change values, and send out event packets if the event-transmission conditions are met. The base station keeps track of time-stamped states and freshness of the reporting and non-reporting nodes and creates a synchronized network state estimation using the received event packets, the stored states, time differences, and the graph relations. A specific confidence level of an estimate decides if the uncertainty in the estimate may have any influence on a proposed assignment of the cluster head. If not, the updated routing information is asked selectively from the contributing nodes without performing the poll to all nodes. If confidence, energy, connectivity, load, and stability requirements are not met, then an earlier or safe assignment is chosen.
