MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641099807 A) filed by Rajalakshmi Engineering College on August 18, 2026, for System And Method For Automated Marine Pollution Monitoring Using Synthetic Aperture Radar And Artificial Intelligence.
Inventor includes Dr. J. Senthil Murugan.
The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.
Abstract: This system offers an end-to-end framework for continuous, real-time ocean monitoring to streamline how marine contamination is detected, categorized, and reported. It begins with spaceborne or airborne sensors that pulse microwave radar toward the ocean's surface and collect the backscattered echo signals, giving operators a wide-area surveillance view that works around the clock, regardless of cloud cover or weather conditions. These raw telemetry streams are sent down via radio frequency downlinks to a ground ingestion hub for initial reception, demodulation, and routing to processing clusters. Once ingested, the raw radar data passes through a multi-stage signal processing pipeline—applying speckle filtering, geometric calibration, radiometric correction, and ocean state normalization—to produce clean, high-contrast imagery primed for algorithmic analysis. From there, a deep learning network, fused with real-time meteorological and oceanographic data, analyzes spatial features to map out candidate pollution masks and confidently separate actual oil slicks from deceptive natural look-alikes. When a spill is verified, the system bundles the segmentation data, location metrics, and vessel tracking details into actionable incident reports, automatically pushing instant alerts to coastal managers and spill-response units for fast containment.
