Abstract: ABSTRACT System and Method for Automated Fake Citation Detection in Single-Column Publications A computer-implemented system and method are disclosed for detecting potentially fake, irrelevant, or inconsistent citations in single-column publications supplied as PDF files. The system receives a PDF through a graphical interface, validates and stores the file, and extracts text and positional information. An abstract extraction module identifies content between predefined Abstract and Introduction markers while excluding header text. A reference extraction module detects reference-section headings, recognizes numbered and author-year styles, removes boilerplate, and merges wrapped entries. A preprocessing module normalizes words, removes punctuation, symbols, duplicates, and stop words, and generates meaningful vocabularies. References are checked for citation within the article body and compared with the abstract vocabulary. A similarity module calculates a matched-word percentage, and a configurable decision module classifies each reference as genuine, suspicious, or potentially fake. Results, matched terms, scores, citation status, and reasons are displayed and exported as a downloadable report before temporary files are deleted.
