Abstract: A hybrid kinetic energy recovery system (H-KERS) for high-performance vehicles is disclosed. The system integrates a flywheel- based mechanical kinetic energy recovery subsystem and a battery-based electrical kinetic energy recovery subsystem under a unified control architecture. An adaptive energy management algorithm dynamically selects energy recovery and deployment pathways based on flywheel stored energy, battery state of charge, and braking demand, thereby prioritizing higher-efficiency mechanical storage before electrical storage. The invention further includes a helical gear and dog-clutch transmission assembly fabricated from Ti-6Al- 4V material and validated through finite element analysis to ensure structural integrity under repeated KERS engagement cycles. A coupled thermal-energy management framework integrates battery thermal dynamics with active liquid cooling to maintain battery temperatures within safe operating limits during racing conditions. The invention additionally provides a unified co-simulation platform integrating vehicle dynamics, energy storage, thermal behavior, and control logic for optimized regenerative braking performance and energy utilization.
