MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631126880 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology, Patna on October 24, 2026, for System And Method For Adaptive Reuse Of Heritage Wells For Rainwater Harvesting And Groundwater Recharge.

Inventors include Kumar, Santosh; and Kumar, Ravish.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present invention pertains to a system and method for adaptive reuse of heritage wells for decentralized rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge. The system (100) comprises a restored well shaft (1) having a porous and permeable lining (2) configured to filter rainwater and facilitate lateral infiltration (5) into surrounding ground formations. An n inverted pyramid rain catcher (6), removably and non-permanently mounted over an opening of the well shaft (1), comprises a corrosion- resistant structural frame (7) secured to the ground, an inverted pyramidal frustum frame (8) fitted thereover, a catchment membrane (10) stretched over the frustum frame (8) and defining a plurality of inclined surfaces (9) sloping towards said lower opening (8d), and a central conduit (11) that directs rainwater into the restored well shaft (1). A safety grille (13) is provided at the well opening, and an overflow system (14) diverts excess rainwater to a secondary recharge location (16). Fig.1
