Abstract: A graphene oxide-based organic nanocomposite, its method of synthesis, and functional applications in advanced chemical processes are disclosed. The nanocomposite comprises a graphene oxide sheet, a two-dimensional support of high specific surface area bearing hydroxyl, epoxide, carbonyl, and carboxyl groups, and an organic functional component conjugated thereto through those oxygen groups, preferably covalently by amidation, esterification, or epoxide ring-opening, and selected to confer a specific functionality, such as a chelating ligand for heavy metals, a recognition element for sensing, or a catalytic moiety, toward a target species. Conjugation with retention of function, together with the organic component acting as a spacer that prevents graphene oxide restacking and the graphene oxide amplifying and, when reduced, electrically transducing the organic function, yields a synergy whereby the composite outperforms both components individually. Synthesized reproducibly and adaptable across applications by the choice of organic component, the composite is used to remove water pollutants with superior capacity and selectivity, catalyze reactions on a recoverable support, sense analytes, and separate species, with regenerability and recoverability.
