Abstract: Swarm Intelligence (SI) is a robust paradigm learned from nature-inspired collective behaviours, including ant colonies, bird flocking, and swarms of bees. When applied to robotics and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), SI offers a decentralized, scalable, and fault- tolerant system for solving real-world problems of high complexity. Conventional centralized designs tend to be plagued with communication bottlenecks and single points of failure, while swarm-based systems allow for distributed autonomy and robustness in uncertain, dynamic, and disaster-prone scenarios. Recent studies emphasize various algorithms like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) for path planning, victim detection, and multi-target search in environments filled with obstacles. Research also applies SI to enhance human decision-making, allowing cooperative teams to arrive at greater accuracy in mission planning. These developments hold potential for developing adaptive, intelligent systems that can conduct autonomous exploration, surveillance, and large-scale rescue operations. The focus of this work involves examining the latest SI models, testing their performance for UAV swarm coordination, dynamic path planning, and disaster response, and presenting the gaps for future improvement. Special emphasis is laid on edge computing integration, elastic collaboration platforms, and hybrid algorithms, which enable robust and scalable surveillance and rescue operations. This survey not only summarizes recent advances but also offers insights on how to build next-generation swarm-intelligent systems for safety-critical operations.
