Abstract: The present invention relates a sustained-release topical pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. A sustained-release topical pharmaceutical comprises of: i) a drug, ii) ethyl cellulose, iii) polyvinyl alcohol, iv) dichloromethane, v) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, vi) ethanol, and v) distilled water. The drug is encapsulated within polymeric nanosponges comprising ethyl cellulose as a polymer matrix and polyvinyl alcohol as a stabilizing agent, and wherein the composition provides sustained release of the drug for up to about 48 hours following topical administration. A method for preparing a sustained-release topical pharmaceutical composition comprises of: adding an organic phase having drug and ethyl cellulose in dichloromethane dropwise into an aqueous phase having polyvinyl alcohol in distilled water to form drug-loaded polymeric nanosponges, followed by incorporating dispersed polymeric nanosponges into sodium carboxymethyl cellulose gel to obtain a homogeneous sustained-release topical pharmaceutical composition.
