The sustained-release calcium supplement composition characterized by comprising a high-load sustained-release calcium salt matrix or a calcium releasing matrix. The calcium releasing matrix is configured to provide controlled and prolonged release of calcium following an administration. Said sustained-release calcium supplement compositions are configured to generate prolonged gastrointestinal calcium release, prolonged systemic calcium exposure, and sustained suppression of circulating parathyroid hormone concentrations for modulating the calcium–parathyroid hormone (PTH) endocrine axis through controlled calcium-release.
