MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611087208 A) filed by Jamia Millia Islamia on July 16, 2026, for Sustainable Hydrometallurgical Process For Selective Recovery Of Critical Metals From Spent Lib Black Mass.
Inventors include Inamul Haq; and Naved Ahsan.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a sustainable hydrometallurgical process (100) for the selective recovery of critical metals from end-of-life lithium-ion battery black mass. The process(100) comprises thermally pre-treating the black mass to remove residual electrolyte, binders, and volatile compounds; leaching the thermally pre- treated black mass with an aqueous oxalic acid solution to selectively dissolve lithium while retaining transition metals as insoluble metal oxalates; recovering lithium carbonate from the lithium-rich leachate; leaching the solid residue with an aqueous acidic solution in the presence of an oxidizing agent to dissolve base metals; recovering graphite from the undissolved residue; removing impurity metals by pH-controlled hydroxide precipitation; recovering copper, manganese, and cobalt by sequential solvent extraction; and recovering nickel by pH adjustment, thereby enabling efficient and scalable recovery of five critical metals lithium, copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel together with graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries. The process provides a sustainable and industrially scalable solution for battery recycling and resource recovery.
