Abstract: Sustainable cementitious mortar composition using Andaman volcanic mud activated with calcium oxide Abstract: The present invention provides a sustainable cementitious mortar composition using naturally occurring volcanic mud from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a non-calcined supplementary cementitious material in combination with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and calcium oxide (CaO) as an activating component. The volcanic mud is prepared by drying, mechanical pulverization and sieving to obtain particles passing through 90 µm, without calcination, thermal activation or chemical treatment. The volcanic mud partially replaces OPC, with investigated OPC-to-volcanic-mud proportions of 30:70 to 70:30 and controlled CaO addition. A preferred formulation comprises 50% OPC, 50% volcanic mud and 2.5% CaO, with Zone II M-sand and a water-to-binder ratio of about 0.45. The preferred formulation demonstrated 28-day compressive strengths of 16.76 MPa in the disclosed experimental programme. The invention provides a locally processable mortar system capable of reducing OPC consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and material cost, particularly for non-structural construction applications.
