MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611090685 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Roorkee on July 25, 2026, for Superhydrophobic And Antifouling Composite Surface And Method Of Fabricating The Same.

Inventors include Prof. Varun Sharma; Nitesh Kumar; Dr. Saminderpreet Singh; and Prof. Sai Ramudu Meka.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: Disclosed is a superhydrophobic and antifouling composite surface (70) obtained by maskant-assisted cold spray additive manufacturing. A composite feedstock powder (20) comprising a metal matrix and graphene is provided, a patterned maskant (30) defining selective deposition regions is placed in direct contact with a metallic substrate (10), and the composite feedstock powder (20) is deposited through the patterned maskant (30) by cold spray at a gas temperature below the melting point of the metal matrix to form a composite deposit (50) having a lotus-leaf-inspired hierarchical micro-nano surface texture (60), after which the patterned maskant (30) is removed. Raised micro-pillars (62) provide a first length scale and a finer morphology from the metal matrix and graphene provides a second length scale. The composite surface (70) is superhydrophobic and self-cleaning, has enhanced corrosion resistance, and exhibits antibacterial and antifouling activity. Ref.
