Abstract: The present invention relates to an ultra-low-energy communication and routing system for underground sensor networks using naturally occurring subsurface thermal gradients and thermal-shadow patterns as a communication medium. Buried sensor nodes include thermal sensor arrays configured to detect temperature variations, thermal fronts, and shadow regions formed due to soil heterogeneity, moisture distribution, and environmental conditions. A thermal-signature extraction module processes the detected thermal behaviour and generates gradient vectors for adaptive routing decisions between neighbouring nodes. Information is transmitted using passive or active thermal-pulse encoding and decoded through analysis of resulting thermal diffusion patterns. The invention eliminates reliance on conventional electromagnetic, acoustic, or wired communication systems, thereby reducing power consumption, infrastructure complexity, and environmental interference. The system provides stable and environment-adaptive communication across varying soil conditions and enables long-duration underground monitoring for agriculture, environmental sensing, geotechnical investigation, infrastructure monitoring, defence surveillance, and resource assessment applications.
