Abstract: ABSTRACT SUBSURFACE GEOMECHANICAL MONITORING NODE WITH PASSIVE DIFFERENTIAL MECHANICAL LINKAGE AND CASCADED AMPLIFICATION A subsurface geomechanical monitoring node (100) installable in a borehole (102) is provided. The monitoring node (100) includes a plurality of soil anchors (104a, 104b, 104n) positioned at mutually different underground depths, each soil anchor configured to follow displacement of a surrounding soil layer. A plurality of coupling members (106) mechanically connect the soil anchors to a centralised transduction assembly. A passive differential mechanical linkage (108) receives displacement inputs from the coupling members (106) and mechanically cancels a component of displacement common to the soil anchors while outputting a differential displacement representing relative movement between soil layers at different depths. A cascaded mechanical amplification stage (110) amplifies the differential displacement. A single displacement sensor (112) receives an output of the cascaded mechanical amplification stage (110) and generates an electrical signal corresponding to the amplified differential displacement. A controller (114) samples the electrical signal. (Fig. 1)
