Abstract: A method of producing an aqueous solution of an N-alpha Na-Fmoc urethane protected amino acid is provided. The method involves contacting a protected amino acid with a solubilizing basic compound such as an amine or an ammonium compound in an aqueous solvent to produce a dissolved salt of the protected amino acid. The aqueous solution of the protected amino acid may be used to synthesise peptides in aqueous phase.
