Abstract: A solar photovoltaic system monitoring and control device (100) increases energy harvest from a photovoltaic array (10) and evaluates its long-term performance. The device comprises a DC-DC converter (20) having a duty-cycle-controlled switching element (22) between the array (10) and a load (70); a sensor unit (30) with voltage (31), current (32), module temperature (33) and irradiance (34) sensors; and a processing unit (40). The processing unit tracks a maximum power point by perturbing the duty cycle while adaptively varying the perturbation step according to a rate of change of power, converging rapidly yet oscillating little; detects partial shading and scans an operating-voltage range for a global maximum; and computes a periodical efficiency metric over a diurnal, seasonal or annual period by relating harvested to incident energy, at least one tracking parameter being adjusted in dependence on the metric.
