Abstract: The present invention relates to a sodium metal battery system employing a hierarchically micro-mesoporous agricultural crop residue derived biocarbon electrode and a method for preparation thereof. The battery system comprises a sodium-metal electrode, a biocarbon electrode, a separator membrane, and an electrolyte comprising atleast one sodium salts and a fluoroethylene carbonate additive. The biocarbon electrode is prepared from a biomass precursor, preferably sugarcane bagasse, through washing, drying, pyrolysis, potassium hydroxide activation, washing, drying, grinding, sieving, and slurry coating on a copper current collector. The engineered micro- mesoporous structure comprises micropores and mesopores that provide sodium storage sites and ionic transport pathways. The electrolyte comprises sodium salts in carbonate-based solvents with fluoroethylene carbonate additive. The battery operates in a voltage range of about 2 V to 3 V and demonstrates cycling stability up to 160 cycles.
