Abstract: ABSTRACT SMARTPHONE-BASED CURVE SPEED WARNING SYSTEM FOR REAL-TIME DETECTION OF HORIZONTAL CURVES AND DYNAMIC SPEED THRESHOLD ALERTING The present invention relates to a low-cost curve speed warning system for improving road safety, particularly on two-lane rural highways, by providing real-time speed warnings to drivers approaching horizontal curves. The system comprises a smartphone-based application configured to obtain real-time vehicle position and motion data using one or more smartphone sensors, including at least a Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor, and optionally a gyroscope and accelerometer. A processing module identifies an approaching horizontal curve, determines one or more geometric parameters including curve radius, and computes a safe curve speed using a roadway design or vehicle-dynamics relationship. A warning decision module compares the current vehicle speed with the safe curve speed and generates a warning when the speed difference exceeds a predetermined threshold, thereby enabling anticipatory speed reduction before entry into the curve.
