The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.

Abstract: The present invention concerns an intelligent portable paper-based analytical device (SmartPAD) for rapid and low cost, but also decentralised assessment of water quality. It is composed of a biodegradable cellulose-based microfluidic paper substrate with wax patterned hydrophobic microfluidic channels, colorimetric sensing zones enhanced with nanomaterials, and an artificial intelligence integrated smartphone analytics platform. The sensing zones are loaded with a specific biochemical reagent such as resazurin-based microbial activity indicators, bromocresol purple-lactose complexes for coliform detection, bromothymol blue for pH determination, heavy metal-sensitive nanoparticles, and biosensing compounds that are sensitive to toxins. Water samples are carried by passive capillary action with no power or instrumentation needed. It takes sensor images with a dedicated smartphone application, transforms them to RGB space, performs CIE Lab transformation, adds machine-learning-based sensor calibration and geotags the risk assessment, which is then colorimetrically interpreted by AI. The platform also includes cloud connectivity to map water safety in near real time and provide predictive water contamination analysis. The system has high correlation with traditional laboratory detection methods and can detect multiple parameters simultaneously in about 4 hours. The invention provides a low cost, environmentally friendly, portable, field deployable, and intelligent solution for use in rural communities, in disaster response, for environmental monitoring and agencies, for healthcare organizations,.and for smart city water surveillance systems.
