Abstract: Traditional techniques of blood sampling (e.g. hypodermic needles and Vacutainer systems) may cause excessive blood withdrawal, pain to the patient, waste of the sample and the need for manual operation. The present study proposes a smart blood collecting system for the enabling of a controlled, accurate and effective blood sampling for diagnostic purposes. The system comprises a finger-prick method of blood extraction along with capillary collection, real-time sensing, and a microcontroller-based control system for extracting only the needed quantity of blood, about 0.3 mL. Real-time monitoring is used to constantly measure the amount of collected blood, while the automatic shutdown system ensures that no extra blood will be extracted. In this way, the system aims to reduce human errors and make patients feel comfortable when compared to traditional blood sampling techniques through the veins. The collected sample can be used for various medical diagnosis processes, such as the determination of glucose concentration, hemoglobin concentration, and complete blood count test. Due to its simplicity, cost-efficiency, portability, and user-friendly nature, the new system may be used in hospitals, diagnostic centers, POC tests, and in rural settings. Overall, the smart blood collection system presents a new solution that will help to enhance blood sampling.
