Abstract: Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) is one of the most prevalent and dangerous vulnerabilities in modern web applications, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts into trusted websites. These scripts can compromise user data, hijack sessions, and damage application integrity. Traditional detection mechanisms often rely on static rules or signature-based approaches, which are insufficient against evolving and obfuscated attack patterns. This project, “Smart XSS Attack Detection and Sanitizer with Risk Scoring,” proposes an intelligent and adaptive solution to identify, analyze, and mitigate XSS attacks in real time. The system leverages a combination of pattern analysis, heuristic techniques, and optionally machine learning models to detect suspicious input across web forms, URLs, and APIs. A key feature of the system is its dynamic risk scoring mechanism, which evaluates each input based on multiple factors such as payload complexity, script patterns, encoding techniques, and behavioral indicators. Based on the computed risk score, the system categorizes threats into different severity levels (low, medium, high), enabling prioritized responses. In addition to detection, the system integrates an advanced sanitization module that automatically cleanses malicious input while preserving legitimate user data. This ensures both security and usability. The proposed solution can be deployed as middleware or integrated into existing web frameworks, providing scalable and efficient protection.
