MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641111364 A) filed by Pragati Engineering College on September 16, 2026, for Smart Wheelchair With Automatic Pressure Redistribution.

Inventors include Dr. M. Radhika Mani; Dr. Alugolu Avinash; Ms. Harini Allampalli; and Mrs. P. Sandhya.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The present invention introduces a Smart Wheelchair with Automatic Pressure Redistribution that offers comfort, safety and posture support for users. It helps prevent pressure-related injuries that can happen when someone uses a wheelchair for a time. The system includes a wheelchair frame, a pressure sensor array built into the seat and backrest a pressure control unit that has a microcontroller, electric or pneumatic pressure control parts, a power source and a way for the user to get notifications. The pressure sensors are always checking the pressure that the users body puts on parts of the seat and backrest. The data from the pressure sensors is analyzed by the control unit to find areas with pressure, long periods of high pressure and to look at how pressure is spread out. The control unit has set pressure limits. Can automatically change the firmness, height, angle or support of a specific area by using the right actuators. This system moves the users weight away from high-pressure areas to lower-pressure areas without the need for manual changes. The wheelchair can also monitor posture check how long pressure is applied and send warnings to the user or a caregiver if pressure stays in one place long. The pressure information and system status can be sent to a phone or a remote place for tracking and keeping records. The invention offers seating support less pressure on one area, for a long time more stability and comfort while sitting and lower chances of getting pressure injuries especially for people who use a wheelchair for a long time. The system can be adjusted for body sizes, seating needs and user conditions. It is used in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, elderly care and personal mobility.
