Abstract: The rapid advancement of automation technologies has significantly transformed the retail industry, creating a demand for faster, more efficient, and user-friendly shopping experiences. This project presents the design and development of a Smart Trolley System that automates the billing process by enabling customers to scan products directly while shopping. The system integrates a handheld or fixed barcode/QR scanner, a microcontroller-based processing unit, and IoT-based communication to support real-time billing and data management. In this system, customers scan each product using the scanner mounted on the trolley, after which the item details and price are instantly retrieved from a database and added to the total bill. The updated billing information is displayed in real time on an LCD screen or a connected mobile interface, eliminating the need for traditional checkout counters and reducing waiting time. To enhance security and transaction transparency, the system can be integrated with a digital verification mechanism, ensuring that all scanned items are properly recorded before exiting the store. The prototype demonstrates efficient performance with quick response time, accurate billing, and improved user interaction. By shifting the scanning responsibility to the customer, the Smart Trolley System reduces infrastructure complexity and operational costs while maintaining efficiency and convenience. This approach provides a scalable and cost-effective solution for modern retail environments, promoting a seamless and contactless shopping experience.
