Abstract: An increasing need for securing restricted, unmanned, and hazardous environments has demonstrated inadequacies in conventional surveillance systems. These include human presence throughout monitoring processes, power and storage resource wastage, and generation of alarm triggers through human errors in detecting human from animal movements. All these issues have created the need for developing an intelligent surveillance system for efficient threat detection and monitoring. To address these issues, the Smart Surveillance System utilizes IoT sensors along with ESP32-CAM technology and object detection technique to develop an automated surveillance system. Movement detection around secure zones is carried out using ultrasonic sensors whereas any tampering, damage, or breaking of the fence is monitored through the vibration sensor module. Any suspicious activity triggers the operation of ESP32- CAM to obtain visuals of the monitoring environment. The collected data are then analyzed by a YOLO-based object detection model to detect objects ranging from people, animals, and other forms of vehicles. Threat levels and alerts are provided depending on the kind of object detected and the events occurring at the monitored sites. The security staff can employ a Web-based dashboard to keep track of all these events and obtain information about surveillance feeds, detection history, system status, and threat alerts. Interactions between the different elements such as sensors, cameras, monitoring systems, and notifications are managed by a central server. All these detection data, timestamps, and alerts are kept in a centralized database. It would be possible to carry out real-time monitoring and analyze the security events for future use. The proposed system provides efficient monitoring capabilities and reduced costs due to minimized camera usage, minimized false alarms, and effective responses to security threats. The inclusion of smart sensing technology, object detection, and instant notifications ensures that this system works efficiently. This is a feasible solution applicable in areas such as border control, industries, educational establishments, smart city initiatives, critical infrastructures, and more.
