Abstract: The present invention relates to a Smart Straw, particularly a portable and reusable stainless-steel drinking straw incorporating an electronic water-quality sensing and visual indication system within a single drinking implement. The smart straw comprises an elongated tubular body having a mouthpiece end, an intake end, and an internal fluid path through which water flows during drinking. A sensing section is provided along the tubular body and includes at least one sensor exposed to the internal fluid path for detecting one or more water-quality parameters. In an embodiment, the sensing section may further include an optical sensing arrangement comprising an emitter and a receiver positioned on opposite sides of the fluid path. An electronics housing is integrated with or removably attached to an upper portion of the tubular body and is isolated from the fluid path by a sealed bulkhead or wet-dry barrier. The electronics housing contains a microcontroller circuit board and a rechargeable power source. The microcontroller receives and processes analog signals generated by the sensor or sensors and compares corresponding parameter values with predefined safety thresholds. Based on the comparison, a multi-color visual indicator provides an immediate tri-state indication, wherein green represents a safe condition, yellow represents a borderline condition, and red represents an unsafe condition. The invention eliminates the need for a separate water-quality meter or external display, thereby providing convenient point-of-use water-quality feedback. The reusable, compact, portable, and energy-efficient configuration makes the smart straw suitable for personal use, travel, outdoor activities, emergency situations, and applications requiring rapid preliminary assessment of drinking-water quality.
