Abstract: The present invention relates to a Smart Scan Strategy for Electronic Warfare (EW) that enables efficient and adaptive monitoring of electromagnetic spectrum activity. Conventional spectrum scanning generally follows a fixed sequence or predefined scanning parameters, which may result in unnecessary scanning of inactive or less significant frequency regions. The proposed invention addresses this limitation by using information obtained during scanning to determine which frequency region should be scanned next and how it should be scanned. The system follows a feedback-based workflow comprising spectrum sensing, signal processing, feature extraction, spectrum prioritization, scan parameter selection, focused scanning, and information updating. Initially, electromagnetic signals are received and processed to identify characteristics such as signal strength, frequency occupancy, bandwidth, persistence, and temporal variation. The spectrum is then divided into frequency regions, and each region is assigned a scanning priority based on the observed activity. Based on the priority, suitable scanning parameters such as dwell time, frequency step size, revisit interval, and scan resolution are selected. The selected region is subsequently scanned, and the newly obtained information is stored and combined with historical scan information to update the priorities for the next scanning cycle. This continuous feedback process allows the system to give greater attention to active, persistent, intermittent, newly emerging, or changing frequency regions while reducing unnecessary scanning of relatively inactive regions. The invention may be implemented using software, hardware, firmware, or a combination thereof and can be integrated with electronic warfare, spectrum monitoring, and related electromagnetic sensing systems.
