MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641100588 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences on August 20, 2026, for Smart Resistance Band With Progressive Gear System.
Inventors include A. Likitha; Dr. Arangasamy; and Dr Ramya Mohan.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a mechanically engineered adaptive resistance-training device designed for physiotherapy, rehabilitation, sports conditioning, and general fitness, introducing a progressive gear-based mechanism capable of automatically adjusting resistance levels without the use of electronics or external power. The device consists of a compact housing that contains a multi-stage spring engagement system connected to a central drum, to which a single external resistance band is attached. When the user pulls the band, the drum rotates and sequentially activates five steel springs arranged in increasing stiffness, creating smooth, continuous, and controlled resistance progression similar to the functioning of a mechanical gearbox. This enables users to experience predictable and natural resistance increments that match their strength curve, eliminating the need to manually switch bands or adjust equipment settings. The invention addresses a major gap between simple linear resistance bands, which lack progression, and advanced smart training machines, which are bulky, non-portable, and expensive. By offering a mid-range, portable, and cost-effective solution, the device is highly suitable for physiotherapy clinics, home-based rehabilitation, elderly strengthening, neuromotor recovery, athletic training, and general fitness. Its modular structure supports easy customization of spring stiffness, adjustment of activation thresholds, and optional integration of sensors for future advanced monitoring. Overall, the invention provides a safe, efficient, and clinically relevant adaptive-resistance system that combines simplicity with mechanical sophistication, fulfilling the long-standing need for accessible progressive-loading equipment in the healthcare and fitness sectors.
