MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641072279 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on June 10, 2026, for Smart Pen Device For Cognitive State Detection.

Inventors include Chiranji Lal Chowdhary; Abhishek Ranjan; and Sreehasa Gabbeta.

The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT SMART PEN DEVICE FOR COGNITIVE STATE DETECTION A smart pen device (100) comprises a housing (105) for holding during writing activities, a writing tip (110) coupled to the housing (105), and a plurality of sensor modules (120) within the housing (105) including a motion sensing unit (122) detecting pen orientation and writing trajectory patterns, a pressure sensing unit (124) measuring writing pressure, a grip sensing element (126) detecting grip intensity variations, and a pause detection mechanism (128) identifying temporal characteristics of writing behavior. An embedded processing unit (130) coupled to the sensor modules (120) acquires behavioral signals, performs behavioral feature extraction, and correlates variations across the sensor modules (120) to derive behavioral indicators associated with learning activity. A cognitive state detection module (140) analyzes the behavioral indicators to determine a cognitive learning state of the user. A wireless communication interface (150) transmits the cognitive learning state to an external device.
