Abstract: A smart packaging system (100) and apparatus (200) for passive neutralization and immobilization of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) present in consumables. The system (100) comprises a multilayer structure including an outer structural layer (101), a food- safe barrier layer (102), a microplastic capture functional layer (103) containing surface-modified nanostructures with selective affinity for polymeric particulates, and a microplastic aggregation and immobilization zone (104) formed from a three-dimensional sequestration matrix. An internal permeable interface (105) enables contact between the consumable and the capture functional layer (103). The system operates without external power and reduces MNP concentration via electrostatic interactions, Van der Waals forces, and deep-bed sequestration within the aggregation zone (104). In certain embodiments, the apparatus (200) further includes a functionalized inner lining, a subsurface sequestration pocket, and a visual indicator patch (105) providing a detectable response to MNP accumulation.
