Abstract: The present invention relates to a Smart IV Site Monitor for monitoring an intravenous (IV) cannula insertion site during IV infusion. The system comprises a camera module, temperature sensor, pressure sensing module, drip-rate sensing module, controller, local LED indicator and wireless communication module. The camera captures image information of the IV insertion site and compares subsequent images with baseline image information to identify changes in surface contour, shape, size, colour or other image characteristics. Temperature, IV-line pressure and drip rate are simultaneously monitored. The controller processes and combines the image- derived and sensor-derived information to determine a possible abnormal IV-site condition. When a predetermined detection criterion is satisfied, the system provides a local visual indication and transmits a wireless alert to an authorized healthcare monitoring device. The system assists healthcare personnel in continuous monitoring and timely inspection of a potentially abnormal IV site.
