Abstract: Fuel theft is a major problem faced by truck owners, transport companies, and fleet operators. Owners of trucks, buses, fuel tankers, construction vehicles, agricultural vehicles, mining vehicles, delivery vans and other commercial fleet vehicles constantly face the problem of fuel theft. These vehicles often travel long distances or are parked in isolated locations leaving them vulnerable to fuel pilfering and unauthorized tampering. Existing vehicle systems are limited to displaying the fuel level through a fuel gauge and lack the capability to identify theft attempts or offer instant alerts. This results in vehicle owners and fleet operators normally finding out about fuel theft only once a large volume of fuel has been stolen, which means financial losses, increased operating expenses, and a general downturn in fleet efficiency. This project proposes an IoT based Smart Fuel Theft Detection and Vehicle Security System to overcome the above challenges. The system is intended to be easily installed in commercial vehicles. It is based on a microcontroller ESP32 which constantly monitors the fuel tank and its surroundings with the help of several sensors. A vibration sensor detects abnormal vibrations from drilling, hammering or trying to break into the fuel tank. A reed switch detects if the fuel tank cap has been opened by an unauthorized person. A motion sensor detects if the vehicle is parked or in motion, which helps to reduce false alarms. A GPS module is used to find the location of the vehicle and in case of any suspicious activity, it immediately sends an alert to the owner’s mobile phone through a GSM module, enabling a quick response. The proposed solution assists in preventing fuel theft before it leads to large fuel losses with real-time theft detection, instant mobile notifications, GPS-based location tracking and enhanced vehicle security. The proposed system is a cost effective, reliable and intelligent method of protecting fuel, reducing operational losses and improving the safety and efficiency of commercial fleet management as compared to traditional fuel monitoring systems.
