Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a Smart IoT-Based Manhole Monitoring and Hazard Detection System developed for enhancing underground public safety, intelligent municipal infrastructure management, and real-time environmental monitoring within sewer and drainage networks. The system comprises an Arduino Arduino UNO controller, a Espressif Systems NodeMCU ESP8266 microcontroller module, MQ-series gas sensing modules, an ultrasonic water level monitoring sensor, a magnetic reed switch mechanism, a display interface, and an alert generation unit configured for continuous underground hazard detection and automated emergency response. In one embodiment, the Arduino UNO is configured for sensor interfacing, environmental data acquisition, and local monitoring operations, while the NodeMCU ESP8266 enables IoT-based wireless communication, remote monitoring, and real- time alert transmission. The invention continuously monitors hazardous underground conditions including toxic gas accumulation, sewage overflow, abnormal water level rise, drainage blockage, and unauthorized manhole lid opening through integrated multi-sensor analysis. The gas sensing modules detect hazardous gases such as methane, smoke, ammonia, and carbon monoxide within underground sewer chambers, whereas the ultrasonic sensor continuously measures sewage and water levels for identifying overflow conditions and drainage blockage. The magnetic reed switch mechanism is configured to detect accidental lid displacement, unauthorized opening, or theft of the manhole cover. Upon detecting hazardous environmental conditions exceeding predefined threshold limits, the system automatically activates buzzer alerts, visual warning indications, and IoT-based wireless notification mechanisms for transmitting real-time emergency alerts to municipal authorities or authorized maintenance personnel. The invention thereby minimizes dependence on manual inspection procedures, reduces sewer-related accidents, improves sanitation worker safety, and enhances municipal response efficiency. Accordingly, the present invention provides a compact, cost-effective, energy-efficient, scalable, and intelligent underground monitoring solution suitable for municipal sewer systems, industrial underground chambers, smart drainage infrastructure, and smart city safety applications through integrated embedded and IoT-enabled multi-sensor monitoring technology.
