Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to a privacy preserving intelligent road accident prevention and driver safety system for two and four wheelers utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI). The system combines computer vision, image processing, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, edge computing and multi-modal sensor fusion technologies to enable real-time road hazard detection, driver behaviour monitoring and accident risk prediction. Images of the driving environment and driver are continually taken by one or more on-board cameras and vehicle dynamics and environmental parameters are taken by multiple IoT sensors. The captured images are then processed locally via deep learning object detection algorithms to detect vehicles, pedestrians, traffic signs, lane markings, potholes and other road hazards. At the same time, the system detects driver fatigue, distraction, mobile phone use, seat belt and helmet usage. Both the image-derived information and data from IoT sensors are fused in a sensor fusion module to estimate the risk of occurrence and provide early warning of prevention. The local edge processing is in the hands of a module that maintains privacy on the data being processed, anonymizes sensitive information in the image and prevents data transmission unless there is an emergency event. In the event of a high risk, the system will automatically trigger warning messages and emergency communication. The invention offers a low latency, scalable, cost- effective and privacy-preserving intelligent transportation safety solution, which improves a driver's safety, minimizes the likelihood of an accident occurring, and can be used in connected vehicles or smart transportation systems.
