Abstract: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are a significant healthcare concern, particularly among immobilized or bedridden patients. They occur due to prolonged pressure on specific body areas, leading to tissue damage, infection, and increased medical costs. Traditional prevention methods, such as manual repositioning and periodic monitoring, are labor-intensive and may not provide timely intervention. This project proposes a smart hospital bed integrated with pressure ulcer prevention sensors to enhance patient care through continuous monitoring and automated alerts. The system utilizes multiple force-sensitive resistor (FSR) sensors embedded within the bed to detect pressure distribution across the patient's body in real time. These sensors are interfaced with a microcontroller (such as ESP32), which processes the data and identifies high-pressure zones that may lead to ulcer formation. When abnormal pressure is detected over a prolonged duration, the system generates alerts through visual displays or alarms, prompting caregivers to reposition the patient. Additionally, the system can incorporate features such as wireless communication, data logging, and remote monitoring to improve efficiency in clinical environments. Sensor-based monitoring systems have been shown to effectively detect risk conditions and assist caregivers in preventing pressure ulcers. The proposed smart bed aims to reduce caregiver workload, enhance patient safety, and minimize the incidence of pressure ulcers by enabling early detection and preventive action. Its compact, cost-effective, and user-friendly design makes it suitable for hospitals, home care settings, and long-term patient monitoring applications.
