MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641105952 A) filed by Sri Eshwar College Of Engineering on September 02, 2026, for Smart Assistive Wheelchair Control System.

Inventors include Dr. S. Sumathi; Ms. Sindhuja S; N. Gayathri; and Dharshini R P.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: The Smart Assistive Wheelchair Control System proposes for enhancing the mobility, autonomy, and safety of people with physical disabilities. The system provides different control possibilities like voice command, mobile app control, touchscreen navigation and advanced hand gesture detection providing adaptive and user- oriented functionality according to the user’s situation and preferences. Voice control makes it easy to navigate the device by just giving commands like “move forward”, “stop” or “turn left”. These commands are processed by the speech recognition modules in a Raspberry Pi based Python system which increases accuracy. A mobile app (via Bluetooth connectivity) offers real time management capabilities such as directional controls, speed change, emergency stop, battery monitoring and optional GPS tracking via Bluetooth communication. For users without mobile access, a specialized touchscreen interface attached to the wheelchair provides an intuitive control panel with arrows, speed sliders, and stop capabilities. Furthermore, a sophisticated gesture control mechanism using camera-based OpenCV or IMU sensors (MPU6050) is implemented to allow movement using hand gestures, which increases the adaptability and intelligence of the system. Safety is emphasized to avoid collision by implementing emergency stop mechanism and ultrasonic obstacle detection. This avoids conflicts between different control modes and only one of the inputs can be active at any given time. This guarantees operational stability. The objective of this effort is to develop a low-cost multi-modal smart wheelchair system to improve accessibility, safety and independence for users using modern embedded and AI technologies.
