Abstract: The increasing demand for construction site automation is pushing the integration of mobile robots for tasks such as progress monitoring, safety hazard detection, and defect identification. To enable autonomous operation in construction sites, robots must navigate complex, unstructured environments while recognizing both static and dynamic obstacles. This study presents a novel 3D spatial data collection and perception method using Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) for autonomous mobile robots deployed in construction environments. The method uses a custom-designed robot, the Ground Robot for Mapping Infrastructure (GROMI), equipped with multiple laser scanners and cameras to construct a real-time 3D map of the environment. An obstacle detection algorithm is developed to address uneven terrain and dynamic obstacles, enabling the robot to avoid collisions and navigate autonomously. The proposed system enhances the feasibility of using mobile robots for construction management applications, offering efficient and accurate data collection for various construction tasks.
