Abstract: The present disclosure discloses a silicon photonics-based quantum random number (QRN) generation system (100) and a method for generating QRNs. The system (100) comprises a source unit (102) configured to generate an input optical signal and a silicon photonics chip (104) comprising a programmable photonic integrated circuit (PPIC) (106) configured to receive the input optical signal. The PPIC (106) comprises an optical splitter (106A), at least one programmable power splitter (106B) configured to adjust optical power distribution for balanced homodyne detection to suppress classical noise and enhance quantum noise, and a balanced homodyne detector (BHD) (106C) configured to perform differential detection for generating quantum noise signals. An output processing circuitry (OPC) (108) comprising a transimpedance amplifier (108A), an analog-to-digital converter (108B), and a field programmable gate array unit (108C), receives the quantum noise signals from the BHD (106C) and generates the QRNs.
