MUMBAI, India, June 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641070422 A) filed by R. M. K. Engineering College on June 05, 2026, for Sign Language Identification And Conversion Into Tamil Language.
Inventor includes Dr. K R Chairma Lakshmi.
The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.
Abstract: The present invention discloses an Artificial Intelligence-based Sign Language Identification and Tamil Speech Conversion System for enabling effective communication between hearing-impaired individuals and Tamil-speaking users. The system utilizes a camera-based gesture acquisition module, image preprocessing module, hand landmark detection framework, feature extraction engine, and deep learning-based gesture classifier to recognize sign language gestures in real time. The recognized gestures are mapped to Tamil words, phrases, or sentences stored in a language database. A text-to-speech engine converts the Tamil text into audible speech output while a display module provides visual feedback. The invention eliminates the need for sensor-based gloves and expensive wearable devices, thereby reducing implementation costs and improving usability. The system supports deployment on computers, smartphones, embedded devices, and cloud-connected platforms. The invention significantly enhances accessibility, social inclusion, and communication efficiency for hearing-impaired individuals in educational, healthcare, domestic, and public service environments.
