In one aspect, a method performed by an application enabler layer (AEL) server, can include: receiving a request from a vertical application layer (VAL) server for configuring a traffic steering policy for one or more UEs; sending a response to the VAL server; receiving an application layer traffic flow request for one or more access network connections, where the request includes information corresponding to traffic steering policy and an access network identifier; mapping an AEL client and one or more traffic flow identifiers with the access network identifier and a VAL server identifier to enable traffic steering of application traffic; receiving traffic steering adaptation reports for one or more flows, and applying traffic adaptation processes to the one or more flows to an AEL client based on the traffic steering adaptation reports.
