Abstract: Electric vehicle usage is increasing continuously, but the impact of battery aging and ambient temperature must be properly considered in battery management techniques such as active cell balancing. In this paper, battery model behavior is analyzed by integrating electrothermal behavior, cell-level degradation, and model predictive control (MPC)-based active cell balancing. With this approach, battery health condition can be continuously tracked by monitoring loss of lithium inventory (LLI) and loss of active material (LAM) at the cell level. In this work presents a multiscale analysis of lithium-ion battery (LIB) pack aging under two different ambient temperature conditions. The battery model is simulated under identical current profiles, identical initial cell dispersion, and identical balancing parameters at 25 °C and 40 °C. Active cell balancing effectively reduces the difference between SOC levels of cells in both temperature cases. However, due to aging, slight SOC differences appear at 40 °C. Battery degradation is much faster at higher temperature, where lithium inventory loss increases by about 1.95 times and active material loss increases by about 2.36 times compared to 25 °C over the same operating period. This clearly shows the strong influence of ambient temperature on battery aging and overall battery string health.
