MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621058031 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Bombay on May 07, 2026, for Sequentially Engineered Ni-Ru Btc Mof Catalyst Via Controlled Synthesis For Seawater Electrolysis Systems.
Inventors include Dutta, Arnab; Karim, Suhana; and Karmakar, Arun.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to time-dependent nickel-ruthenium metal-organic framework catalyst, a method for its preparation through controlled sequential structural transformation, and its use as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in seawater electrolysis systems. The nickel–ruthenium metal–organic framework constructed with benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate linkers (NiRu-BTC) catalyst which when employed as cathode catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline seawater electrolyte, demonstrates a Faradaic efficiency of 95% or higher and an overpotential of 60 mV or less at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and when employed as anode material for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) attains an overpotential of 200 mV or less at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The scaled-up electrolyzer incorporating the catalyst demonstrates an energy consumption of 47 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen produced, representing a substantial advancement.
