Abstract: A fiber-optic sensing device, sensing system, and method for selective detection and quantification of methanol in a sample containing one or more alcohols are disclosed. The device includes an optical fiber including a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) having a sensing region with reduced cladding thickness configured to expose an evanescent field of a guided optical mode to a surrounding medium. A light source launches light into the optical fiber in a wavelength range of approximately 750 nm to 810 nm, and a detection unit simultaneously measures Bragg wavelength shift and reflected Bragg peak intensity variation. The Bragg wavelength shift is utilized for refractive index-based discrimination of methanol relative to ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, while reflected Bragg peak intensity variation is correlated with methanol concentration. Controlled Hydrofluoric acid etching enhances refractive index sensitivity of the sensing region. The disclosed sensing arrangement enables dual-parameter sensing with enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, temperature stability, and suitability for chemical, healthcare, biosensing, and industrial monitoring applications.
